National Party Congress wraps up

HCMC – The 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam concluded in Hanoi City on January 23 after five days of meetings, finalizing leadership arrangements and setting directions for the new term.

The 14th Party Central Committee held its first plenum and elected a 19-member Politburo. The committee unanimously re-elected To Lam to continue serving as Party General Secretary.

The Central Committee also approved a 13-member Secretariat. With unanimous support from all 200 official and alternate members, the Politburo appointed Tran Cam Tu as permanent member of the Secretariat for the new term.

In addition, 23 members were elected to the Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission. Tran Sy Thanh was re-elected as chairman of the commission.

Addressing the closing session of the Congress, Party General Secretary To Lam thanked delegates for their trust, calling it a great honor and a heavy responsibility before the Party, the people and the nation.

Lam stressed that the new Party Central Committee will lead by example, act as it says, strengthen discipline and unity within the Party, intensify the fight against corruption, wastefulness and negativities, perfect mechanisms for controlling the exercise of power, and enhance personnel work by assigning the right people to the right jobs and evaluating officials based on performance and public trust.

He reaffirmed the Party Central Committee’s commitment to national interests, unity and discipline, the fight against corruption and wastefulness, and improving personnel work based on performance and public trust.

The Congress received 898 congratulatory messages from political parties, international organizations, foreign groups and overseas Vietnamese associations.
