New Covid-19 cases hit record high

HCMC – The Ministry of Health confirmed 14,224 fresh Covid-19 cases this evening, August 30, the highest number of infections in a single day so far.

There were five imported cases and 14,219 domestic infections in 41 provinces and cities, up 1,467 cases against yesterday.

Among the locally-infected cases, Binh Duong Province recorded the biggest number at 6,050, up 636 infections against yesterday, taking the province’s count in the ongoing fourth wave of the pandemic, which began in late April, to 110,258.

HCMC came second with 5,889 infections, up 932 cases, raising the city’s caseload to 215,810. Long An Province detected 524 cases, down nine cases and Dong Nai Province found 491 cases, while the rest were reported in 37 other localities.

The latest domestic infections have raised the country’s caseload in the current fourth wave to 445,291, with 226,042 patients having made a full recovery.

The ministry also reported 315 more Covid-19 fatalities, including 245 in HCMC, 39 in Binh Duong, seven in Tien Giang, six in Long An, four in Dong Nai, three in Dong Thap, and two in Khanh Hoa. Nine other localities reported one Covid-19 death each.

In related news, Thanh Hoa Province has discovered a new infection cluster at its largest private hospital, Hop Luc General Hospital. The Thanh Hoa City Healthcare Center this morning said that the hospital reported five positive Covid-19 cases.

After the first case was found on August 29, the hospital worked with the healthcare center to conduct contact tracing and test 400 people, including its employees, caregivers and patients receiving treatment at the hospital.

The competent forces found 107 direct contacts of the positive cases, while the hospital temporarily stopped receiving patients, the local media reported.

In another development, the Ca Mau Province government today decided to requisition the Cuu Long Plaza commercial center as Field Hospital No. 5 to treat Covid patients due to the complicated development of the disease, according to the provincial Department of Construction.

Work on the field hospital in Ca Mau City’s Ward 5 will be completed within 14 days.

The southernmost province has reported 139 Covid-19 infections in the latest coronavirus wave.
