The net zero tourism movement in Vietnam gained significant attention in 2024, with various initiatives highlighting a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development A key event was the high-profile forum titled “Green Transformation, Net-Zero Travel & Tourism – Creating the Future,” held on September 5, 2024 at the International Travel Expo HCMC (ITE HCMC). This gathering brought together industry leaders and experts to explore actionable plans for advancing green practices and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. On a local level, pilot models of net zero tourism have started to emerge. One standout example is the “Net Zero Tours Ben Tre,” introduced in late March last year. This initiative offers eco-friendly travel, accommodation, and dining experiences while introducing a “net zero passport” to promote environmental consciousness and regenerative activities. Despite these efforts, questions about the feasibility and authenticity of net zero tourism in Vietnam persist. The implementation appears hurried, with many commitments and declarations lacking clear standards or effective verification mechanisms.
