Phap Van-Cau Gie expy in Hanoi to be expanded

HCMC – The Ministry of Construction has endorsed a proposal to study the expansion of the Phap Van-Cau Gie Expressway in Hanoi to 10-12 lanes under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

In an official document sent to the Department for Roads of Vietnam and the project’s investor, Phuong Thanh Tranconsin, the ministry requested that both parties move forward with the next steps for the proposed expansion.

The Phap Van-Cau Gie Expressway was developed in two phases. Phase 1 began toll collection in October 2013, while Phase 2 became operational on July 5, 2019. The expressway spans approximately 29 kilometers, connecting Phap Van Interchange and Dai Xuyen Interchange, and currently operates with six traffic lanes.

Due to heavy congestion, with average daily traffic in both directions reaching around 85,000 passenger car equivalents—nearly double the designed capacity of 55,400—the investor has proposed three expansion options.

Option 1 involves expanding the stretch from Phap Van to Phu Thu Interchange by constructing an elevated road along the existing route. To minimize land clearance and reduce the impact on surrounding residents, the elevated structure would be positioned in the median between the expressway and access roads.

Option 2 proposes expanding the section from Phap Van Interchange to Dai Xuyen Interchange using a similar elevated structure in the median strip.

Option 3 suggests expanding the entire stretch from Phap Van to Dai Xuyen Interchange. For the segment from Phap Van to Khe Hoi, which runs through densely populated residential areas, an elevated road is proposed to reduce land clearance requirements and limit disruption to local communities.
