HCMC – A multi-vehicle collision on the cable-stayed Phu My Bridge in Thu Duc City, HCMC caused a seven-seater car to burn down to the frame and a traffic snarl in surrounding areas.
One seven-seater car, one four-seater car, and one truck caught fire in the seven-vehicle accident but no deaths were reported.
A lot of vehicles were traveling on the Phu My Bridge in the direction from District 7 towards Thu Duc City this afternoon. As they descended the bridge, a truck lost control due to brake failure and hit other vehicles in the same direction.
“One vehicle overturned, and four to five vehicles collided, with some spinning in different directions and getting damaged,” a witness told local media.
Surveillance camera footage showed at nearly 3:00 p.m., a truck was descending the bridge when it lost its brakes, crashed into the hard median barrier, and ploughed into several vehicles before finally coming to a stop after hitting the rear of a semi-truck carrying a steel coil ahead. The truck’s cabin then caught fire.
By 4:00 p.m., the fire had been extinguished.
Lieutenant Colonel Doan Van Quoi, deputy head of the Traffic Police Division of the HCMC Police Department, told local media that by around 5:50 p.m., the scene had been cleared.
However, the accident caused heavy traffic congestion on the Phu My Bridge and the surrounding roads.
A nearly-five-kilometer line of vehicles, mostly trucks, got stuck from the bridge to Nguyen Van Linh road for almost five hours after the accident.
