HCMC – Given massive layoffs since early this year, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has assigned the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to develop a plan to support the unemployed and report to the Government before May 15.

The ministry has written to relevant organizations, associations and localities to survey and report on the labor markets in their areas.

Statistics from the ministry showed that some 149,000 workers lost their jobs while around 294,000 others were underemployed in the first three months of this year.

The workers were mainly from industrial parks and export processing zones in some provinces, such as Dong Nai with 32,600 workers, Binh Duong with 21,700 and Bac Ninh with 14,000.

Massive layoffs and reductions of work hours were also reported at foreign-invested enterprises that make footwear, textiles and garments in Bac Giang, Hai Duong, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Tay Ninh, HCMC, Tien Giang and Vinh Long.

The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs will propose solutions to support workers who have lost their jobs and support businesses that have scaled down production and business activities.
