HCMC – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has urged the swift execution of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project so that it can be ready by 2030, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
Vietnam has revived the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project after an eight-year hiatus in a bid to diversify energy sources and ensure energy security.
During a January 15 meeting of the steering committee for the plant’s construction, PM Chinh instructed ministries and agencies to accelerate the project with a detailed annual implementation plan.
The target is to have Vietnam’s first nuclear power plant operational by 2030, aligning with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party.
Highlighting the importance of nuclear power to Vietnam’s economic growth, Chinh stressed that achieving double-digit GDP growth requires electricity growth of 15% to 18%.
Regarding human resources, Vietnam is projected to need about 2,400 trained personnel for the project. Currently, the country has around 400 personnel with relevant expertise.
The Government has sought assistance from Japan and Russia for training, technology, and financing to advance the implementation of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project.
To address the workforce shortfall, the Government leader tasked Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) and related agencies with establishing training programs and guidelines to develop a skilled nuclear energy workforce.
In addition to the Ninh Thuan project, the Prime Minister called for the creation of a dedicated organization to manage and prepare for future nuclear power projects. He also emphasized the need to review and update regulations concerning taxes, credit, land use, and workforce attraction to support the industry’s growth.
