HCMC – The Vietnam Maritime Administration has proposed upgrading port infrastructure to the Ministry of Transport to accommodate larger vessels, aligning with global shipping trends.

The proposal outlines plans to enhance the capacity of existing public maritime and port infrastructure. Key measures include improving channel depth, draft limits, and safety standards to meet the requirements of larger ships, such as Megamax vessels.

Technical studies and mathematical models will be developed to optimize port operations and address current constraints, including inadequate channel depth and limited pier width.

The Ministry of Transport has directed the Vietnam Maritime Administration to review and refine technical measures before approving ports to handle larger vessels. The agency has also been tasked with ensuring safety protocols at ports already permitted to receive such ships. Until new legal guidelines are established, current regulations for accommodating large vessels will remain in effect.

The proposal emphasizes investments in infrastructure upgrades, modern equipment, and workforce training to improve ports’ capacity to handle larger ships. This includes a review of criteria for the qualifications and experience of personnel, such as pilots and consultants.

The planned upgrades aim to enhance safety and efficiency in Vietnam’s maritime operations, ensuring the sector keeps pace with evolving global shipping demands.
