HCMC – The first half of this year saw identity theft incidents soaring by 50% year-on-year while the number of counterfeit websites mimicking those of businesses and organizations increased fourfold, according to Viettel.

A report on cybersecurity in the first half of the year released by the major telecom firm Viettel on August 26 said the rise in identity thefts has led to fraudulent cases and financial scams rising.

Specifically, there were 46 data breaches involving businesses and organizations in Vietnam. The most commonly leaked information includes customer data and transaction details, particularly from companies in the retail sector. Significant leaks have also been noted in customer identity verification data through electronic technology applications, as well as information from various educational institutions.

Around 17,000 new vulnerabilities have been identified in cyberspace, with more than half classified as high and serious threats. Among these, 71 vulnerabilities pose specific risks to organizations and businesses in Vietnam.

From January to June 2024, the volume of stolen data reached three terabytes, with estimated total damage exceeding US$10 million. These attacks targeted various sectors, including finance, public services, information technology and manufacturing.
