Repeated rockfalls force suspension of Vietnam’s North-South railway

HCMC – Vietnam’s national railway services through the snaking Hai Van Pass between Danang and Hue cities have been suspended following consecutive rockfalls on March 14 that damaged infrastructure and derailed a freight train.

The disruptions began at about 8 a.m. when falling rocks from the mountainside struck the tracks at the section in the Danang City area, warping the rails and causing three axles of freight train AH1 to jump the tracks. While emergency teams moved quickly to repair the damage, a second rockfall occurred at the same location later that evening, prompting authorities to halt all rail traffic through the pass to ensure passenger safety.

The North-South rail line remains temporarily severed, forcing the railway sector to organize bus transfers for hundreds of passengers. Preliminary reports suggest the instability may be linked to ongoing construction projects on the summit of the pass. Technical crews are currently clearing debris and maintaining 24-hour surveillance of the site, with operations expected to resume only after the risk of further rockfalls is fully mitigated and the structural integrity of the national rail infrastructure is restored.
