A 41-year-old South Korean man has made a miraculous recovery after being in a persistent vegetative state for 80 days, thanks to the diligent care provided by doctors at FV Hospital.

The patient suffered a stroke and fell into a deep coma. He was taken to FV Hospital for emergency treatment in May 2024. Initial tests indicated he was in critical condition with dangerously low blood pressure, brain hemorrhage, and severe swelling in the brain.

After a thorough consultation, doctors conducted a three-hour surgery, successfully removing the blood clot from his skull. However, the patient remained in a deep coma, and his prognosis for recovery was highly uncertain, heavily dependent on post-surgical care. While in a vegetative state, the patient’s condition fluctuated, with frequent fevers caused by several life-threatening infections. Then, a miracle occurred: after 80 days in the hospital, he regained consciousness, along with an understanding of English and the ability to lift his right hand and grasp objects.

Saigon Zoo releases rare wild animals back into the wild

The Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden in downtown HCMC collaborated with Cat Tien National Park to release two Asian small-clawed otters and two leopard cats back into the wild on November 11.

The two Asian small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinereus) are classified under Group IB, while the two leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis) fall under Group IIB. Both species are listed as endangered and rare. These four animals were rescued from a wildlife trafficking case in HCMC, according to the Tuoi Tre news site.

During an investigation in April 2023, police in District 1 handed over the otters and leopard cats to the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden for care. When they were first taken in, the two Asian small-clawed otters had not yet opened their eyes, and the leopard cats were still nursing. After approximately 15 months of care, all four animals had grown strong and were deemed fit for release back into the wild.

Helping others after surviving Covid-19

In 2012, Lai Thi Quy, 40, left Dong Nai Province to settle down in HCMC with her husband and their two children. The two workers then lived in a rented house in Pham Van Hai Commune, Binh Chanh District. In 2015, she decided to work as a freelance tailor at home.

In August 2020, Quy had Covid-19 that nearly took her life. Surviving the pandemic after many days under treatment in a field hospital, she began to think of teaching tailoring to those in need to help them earn a living. In 2022, she opened a free tailoring class at her rented house, where she could receive a few students since she had only two sewing machines.

As more and more students came over to Quy’s free tailoring class right in the first year, the Women’s Association of Pham Van Hai Commune presented four sewing machines to the vocational training class, and two more sewing machines in this year. Over the past two years, she has taught 40 women, who could make a living thanks to tailoring skills.

Quy has also had a piggy bank for her and students to raise funds to help needy women and cook free meals for the poor, vnexpress.net reported.
