The United Nations Day of Vesak 2025 was solemnly held in HCMC from May 6 to 8, attracting thousands of religious dignitaries and international delegates from 85 countries and territories, along with a large number of monks, nuns, Buddhists, and residents from across the country.
With the theme “Solidarity and tolerance for human dignity: Buddhist wisdom for world peace and sustainable development,” Vesak 2025 serves not only as an occasion to honor the Buddha but also as a platform to convey a profound humanistic message to the international community, fostering cultural and spiritual connections among nations.
One of the highlights of the event was the ceremony to worship Buddha’s relics at Thanh Tam Pagoda in Binh Chanh District, which were welcomed from India to Vietnam, in a solemn and sacred atmosphere – PHOTOS: LE VUThousands of people including Buddhists patiently lined up to see the relicsDomestic and international visitors and Buddhists pay homage to the Buddha’s relicsClose-up of the Buddha’s relics. This is the fourth time Vietnam has hosted the international spiritual and cultural event Vesak after the previous events in Hanoi (2008), Ninh Binh (2014), and Ha Nam (2019).After the pilgrimage in HCMC, the Buddha’s relics continue to be brought to Ba Den Mountain in Tay Ninh Province, Quan Su Pagoda in Hanoi City from May 14 to 16 and Tam Chuc Pagoda in Ha Nam from May 17 to 21Within the framework of Vesak, the lantern releasing ceremony is also a highlight, featuring the rich spirit of BuddhismThis is a symbolic ritual of light, faith and prayers for peaceThe organizers carefully prepared 20,000 paper-made lanterns with candles, 10,000 battery-powered lanterns (in case of bad weather), and 5,000 plastic lanterns arranged around the big pondA young monk took care of his lantern before releasing itA large number of Buddhists participated in the ceremony in a solemn and respectful atmosphere, together sending wishes for peace and happiness for humanityInternational delegates also joined the lantern releasing ceremony, spreading the spirit of solidarity and compassion without bordersAnother highlight of Vesak 2025 was the Vietnam Buddhist Culture Exhibition, taking place at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Binh Chanh District, attracting a large number of visitorsFor the first time, all 87 versions and images of national treasures related to Buddhism were displayed, depicting the rich and profound development journey of Vietnamese BuddhismThe ceremony to worship the heart relic of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc was held at Vietnam Quoc Tu Pagoda in District 10 from May 6 to 10 received the respect of thousands of people. After the ceremony, this sacred relics were permanently 13 enshrined at the pagoda.
