Samsung Electronics Vietnam (SEV) – the largest foreign-invested enterprise in Vietnam – has continuously launched numerous corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives to demonstrate a strong commitment to local communities alongside its manufacturing and business operations in the country. Environmental protection and student support in STEM education have been the highlights of its CSR efforts over the years.

Multiple environmental activities

On July 31, SEV inaugurated a rooftop solar power system at its plant in the Yen Phong Industrial Park, Bac Ninh Province. With a capacity of 2.38 MWp, the project is expected to generate around 2.59 million kWh of clean electricity annually.

This marks SEV’s first step toward aligning with the Vietnamese Government’s net-zero emissions target and sets the starting point for Samsung Vietnam’s own Net Zero goal.

The company aims to transition to renewable energy sources, contributing to sustainable development in Vietnam and globally. The rooftop solar project is a milestone in Samsung’s sustainability journey in Vietnam.

Speaking about the project, Mr. Kim Iee Soo, general director of SEV, said it not only delivers economic benefits but also underscores Samsung’s strong commitment to environmental and social responsibility in Vietnam, helping create a greener future for the next generation.

In addition to switching to renewable energy, Samsung Vietnam also actively participated in World Environment Day 2025 (June 5, 2025) under the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.” Its factories carried out a series of activities in response.

On June 7, Samsung Electronics Ho Chi Minh Complex (SEHC) partnered with the Youth Union of then Thu Duc City to launch the campaign “Act for a Green City” in HCMC.

SEHC donated 100 trash-sorting bins to local residents to encourage waste segregation at source — a vital step toward improving waste treatment, easing pressure on landfills, and promoting recycling. Additionally, 50 potted plants were gifted to young local union members to encourage a nature-friendly lifestyle.

The company also installed and handed over 10 drinking water purifiers to underprivileged households in Thu Duc, both improving living conditions and reducing plastic waste from bottled water consumption.

Earlier, on June 3, as part of activities leading up to World Environment Day 2025, Samsung Electronics Vietnam Thai Nguyen (SEVT) collaborated with the provincial Environmental Protection Fund to clean up a heavily polluted stream in Pho Hamlet, La Hien Commune of Thai Nguyen Province — an area long affected by accumulated domestic waste.

More than 50 SEVT employees volunteered to clean the stream, collecting and sorting plastic waste. The initiative helped revive the water flow, improve the local environment, and prevent stagnant water and disease outbreaks during the rainy season.

SEVT also contributed VND50 million to support the local government and community in ongoing environmental protection efforts.

On June 4 in Bac Ninh, SEV launched a large-scale awareness campaign in Dong Tien Commune to educate the public about the harmful effects of plastic waste and the importance of recycling. Messages such as “Reduce plastic today, save the Earth tomorrow” and “Every small action creates a big future” were widely shared during the event.

SEV volunteers then planted new trees to replace those knocked down by Typhoon Yagi in 2024 and installed environmental awareness signs in key residential areas. The company also distributed eco-friendly reusable bags to residents to encourage sustainable consumption habits, reduce plastic bag use, and foster a cleaner, greener community.

Alongside these efforts, SEV employees joined local residents in collecting, sorting, and handling waste in residential areas.

Through this series of activities in response to World Environment Day 2025, Samsung Vietnam aims to affirm its commitment to sustainable development—not only in manufacturing but also in how the company engages with communities and the natural environment.

Promoting science education for students

Beyond environmental efforts, Samsung Vietnam also promotes science education through various student competitions.

On May 30, Samsung Vietnam continued its roadshow campaign to launch the Solve for Tomorrow 2025 contest in HCMC—marking the completion of the nationwide Solve for Tomorrow 2025 Roadshow across all three regions of the country.

Following launch events in the North at the end of March 2025 and in Central Vietnam in mid-May 2025, this southern event helped bring the competition to more students in the region. Through this, Samsung aims to further promote STEM education and foster tech talent—one of the essential foundations for Vietnam’s future development.

Mr. Kim Yong Sup, vice president of Samsung Vietnam, stated: “Solve for Tomorrow is one of Samsung’s core corporate social responsibility programs. We hope that the contest will receive strong participation from students and inspire them to unlock their potential, find development opportunities, and generate creative ideas that contribute to a better Vietnamese society.”

Also speaking at the event, Ms. Tran Thi Huyen, director of the Hau Giang Department of Education and Training, said: “As a province located far from HCMC and still limited in science and technology, our teachers and students in Hau Giang have greatly benefited from the Solve for Tomorrow competition over the years. It has sparked students’ passion for science. I believe the career paths of many students will be shaped by this very passion nurtured through today’s opportunity.”

Solve for Tomorrow is a STEM innovation competition for secondary and high school students (with teacher guidance), designed to encourage them to actively explore and apply STEM knowledge to solve real-world social issues.

In Vietnam, the competition was first held in 2019 and has since become an annual platform for creative thinking among students aged 12 to 18. By the end of 2024, nearly 480,000 students and teachers had registered, submitting around 7,500 project entries.

Building on this success, Solve for Tomorrow 2025 runs for eight months—from March 28 to October 31, 2025. This year, students are invited to apply STEM knowledge, artificial intelligence (AI), and design thinking to identify and implement creative solutions for real societal challenges. Focus areas include sustainable environmental development through technology; integrating sports and technology for social change (especially in education and future development); and using technology to build a more sustainable society.

The 2025 competition is expected to attract around 160,000 students for the online learning phase and receive 2,400 project entries from secondary and high schools across the country.

The total prize pool is nearly VND6 billion, with numerous attractive awards. In addition, schools with winning teams will be awarded a STEM Lab sponsored by Samsung, valued at US$60,000.

Samsung’s broader community commitment

On November 8, 2024, Samsung Vietnam organized its second CSR Day to showcase key community-focused initiatives currently being implemented across the country.

At the event, Samsung Vietnam donated 230 wheelchairs to people with disabilities and awarded 630 scholarships to disadvantaged students striving to overcome hardships and excel in their studies. Additionally, 160 scholarships were granted to university students with strong academic performance.

These efforts reflect Samsung’s appreciation for local communities in Vietnam and aim to help extend the educational dreams of students across the country.
