HCMC – Le Thuy Hang, former general director of Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC), is set to go on trial on September 25 on charges of embezzlement and abusing her position while performing official duties.
The HCMC People’s Court will conduct the first-instance trial of 16 defendants over the illegal production of SJC gold bars at the Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) from September 25 to 30.
Le Thuy Hang has been charged with embezzlement and abuse of power while performing official duties.
Facing the same two charges are Mai Quoc Uy Vien, former director of the Tan Thuan jewelry workshop under SJC; Tran Tan Phat, former deputy director of the workshop; Hoang Le Hue, former director of SJC’s Central Region Branch; and Doan Le Thanh, an employee of the workshop.
Five other defendants face embezzlement charges, while six are accused of abusing their positions while performing official duties.
According to the indictment, between October 2021 and September 2024, Le Thuy Hang directed her subordinates at the Tan Thuan jewelry workshop and SJC’s Central Region Branch to carry out unlawful acts to misappropriate assets and gain illegal benefits.
She is accused of causing losses of more than VND95 billion to state assets and personally pocketing over VND73.5 billion.
Regarding the abuse of power charges, Hang allegedly exploited her position as general director to purchase and transfer raw gold from outside sources to Tran Tan Phat, deputy director of the Tan Thuan Jewelry Workshop under SJC.
She also instructed Mai Quoc Uy Vien, director of the workshop, together with Tran Tan Phat, to insert outside raw gold into 56 batches of SJC’s reprocessing of dented gold bars as required by the State Bank of Vietnam. This led to the illegal production of 6,255 SJC gold bars, causing losses of more than VND74 billion and illicit gains of over VND64 billion.
The former general director of SJC allegedly instructed the director of SJC Haiphong to purchase raw gold from outside sources and deliver it to Tran Tan Phat for the unlawful production of 11,503.75 SJC gold rings, causing losses of more than VND15 billion to the State and illicit gains of over VND6.6 billion.
For the act of embezzlement, the indictment identifies Hang as the mastermind behind the misappropriation of 95.8521 taels of gold worth more than VND8.4 billion.
She allegedly directed the director of SJC’s Central Region Branch to falsify and duplicate documents, thereby embezzling over VND3.2 billion from the branch and personally pocketing more than VND2.1 billion.
In total, the indictment states that Hang and her accomplices embezzled more than VND11 billion, with Hang alone benefiting by over VND8.7 billion.
