HCMC – A rare snowfall dusted parts of the northern upland province of Ha Giang today, January 26, as a cold snap swept across the region, reported local media.

Residents in Thuong Phung Commune of Meo Vac District were surprised to see snow falling from the sky this morning.

Snow began falling at around 10 a.m. local time and continued for about 30 minutes in the villages of Xin Phin Chu and Mo Phang, according to Hoang Ly Cau, vice chairman of the commune.

Despite the relatively mild temperature of 3-4 degrees Celsius, the conditions were sufficient for snowfall to occur in this high-altitude area. Thuong Phung is located between 1,500 and 1,700 meters above sea level.

This is the first snowfall in northern Vietnam this winter. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting had previously warned of a cold snap affecting most of northern and north-central Vietnam.

The cold front is expected to continue moving southward, bringing cold air to other parts of the country.

In Hanoi, residents are bracing for rain and cold weather, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 9-12 degrees Celsius.
