Every year on the fourth day of Tet, the people of Gia Vien Village in Phong Dien Township, Hue City, gather at the village playground to celebrate the traditional Du Tien (Fairy Swing) Festival—a cherished event that brings excitement and joy to the Lunar New Year celebrations.
A beloved tradition during Tet, the Fairy Swing Festival draws large crowds of participants and spectators, all eager to compete or cheer each other on. The swing, made from tall, sturdy bamboo trees, is carefully prepared by villagers before Tet to ensure its strength and durability.
Participants must be physically fit, fearless, and determined, as they strive to swing as high as possible to touch or grab the red scarf—the ultimate goal of the game.
Beyond its thrilling competition, the festival serves a deeper purpose. It encourages physical fitness, strengthens community bonds, and fosters mutual support among villagers. According to village elders, the Fairy Swing Festival is also a prayer for good weather and a prosperous harvest in the year ahead.
