HCMC – The first phase of the Son La-Dien Bien-Tay Trang Border Gate Expressway project in the moutainous nothern region will be developed with public funding.
The People’s Committee of Dien Bien Province is assigned as the executing agency of the project, according to a document approved yesterday by the prime minister.
The province will use its local budget for compensation, site clearance, and resettlement, while the central Government will cover construction costs. The Ministry of Finance is currently reviewing the allocation to ensure it aligns with the 2026–2030 medium-term public investment plan.
The Son La-Dien Bien-Tay Trang International Border Gate Expressway is part of a broader expressway network connecting Hanoi with the northwestern region. Currently, investment plans are being finalized for the entire 155-km route, of which 75.3 km runs through Dien Bien Province.
The project’s first phase focuses on the 48.3km Muong Thanh section with a total investment of VND23.25 trillion, while the second phase will extend 27km to the Tay Trang Border Gate with an additional investment of VND8.72 trillion. Designed with a 22-meter-wide roadbed and four lanes, the expressway will allow for a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
