HCMC – Vietnam’s total retail sales of consumer goods and services in May rose 10.2% year-on-year, driven by robust consumer spending and a surge in tourism, showed data from the General Statistics Office under the Ministry of Finance.

Retail sales of goods and services for the month were estimated at VND574.9 trillion, up 0.4% from April and 10.2% from the same period last year, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

In the first five months of 2025, the total retail sales expanded 9.7% year-on-year to VND2.85 quadrillion. The figures reflect a positive recovery in domestic consumption.

The growth was attributed to rising consumer demand during public holidays and the Lunar New Year, alongside a strong rebound in international travels, which have fueled trade and service activities since the beginning of the year.

Among key sectors, tourism posted the highest growth at 24.7%, while accommodation and food services rose 15.2%. In May alone, revenue from accommodation and food services climbed 19.1%, and the travel sector saw a 35% increase, supported by tourism stimulus programs and heightened travel demand.

Retail sales of food and foodstuffs picked up 11.3% while cultural and educational products recorded a 7.9% increase.

Retail sales of goods accounted for 76.5% of the total, amounting to around VND2.18 quadrillion, an 8.2% increase against the same period last year. Some cities and provinces recorded significant growth, including HCMC (8.6%), Haiphong (8.4%), and Hanoi (7.5%).

Revenue from other service sectors stood at VND290.4 trillion, up 12.9%, with notable growth seen in Can Tho, HCMC, and Ha Tinh, ranging from 13% to 18%.

Vietnam attracted 9.2 million international visitors in the first five months of the year, up 21.3% year-on-year. Major destinations such as HCMC, Dong Nai, and Lao Cai reported respective visitor growth of 30.4%, 29.1%, and 24.4%.

To sustain growth momentum, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has introduced several measures to stimulate consumer demand, stabilize domestic markets, ensure steady supply chains, manage the impact of minimum wage adjustments, and promote digital commerce and domestic tourism.
