HCMC – The Ministry of Construction has urged Sun Group to speed up the completion of the master plan for Con Dao Airport for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050, and to report progress by December 25.

In a document sent to Sun Group, the ministry said it had received a report from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on the status of the planning process. The authority has previously issued several notices guiding and pressing the company to follow the required procedures while preparing the plan.

The ministry said Sun Group has not yet submitted a report confirming the completion of the planning dossier in line with earlier commitments.

To keep the project on schedule, the ministry asked Sun Group to urgently complete the planning documents and submit an implementation plan and timeline to the ministry and the aviation authority by December 25.

The ministry also asked Sun Group to coordinate closely with the HCMC People’s Committee and relevant agencies to ensure the plan aligns with approved socio-economic and tourism development orientations for Con Dao.

In May, Sun Group proposed to sponsor the expansion of the Con Dao Airport master plan for 2021–2030, with a vision to 2050. The company said it would cover all costs for research, preparation and public disclosure of the plan in line with regulations.

Con Dao Airport’s runway and taxiway are deteriorating and have limited load-bearing capacity, the ministry said. The runway is 30 meters wide and does not meet standards for Code C aircraft, limiting operations mainly to ATR72 aircraft or similar types.

Sun Group has proposed studying an upgrade and expansion of the airport. The proposal includes extending the runway to meet 4E airport standards and raising capacity to about two million passengers per year by 2030.

If implemented, the upgraded airport could receive aircraft such as Airbus A320, A321, A350 and Boeing 787, and support international routes, including from Japan and South Korea.
