Super typhoon Yagi pounds northern Vietnam

HCMC – Super typhoon Yagi made landfall in Haiphong City and Quang Ninh Province along the country’s northern coast at around 1:45 p.m. this afternoon, September 7, with packing winds of up to 149 kilometers per hour, equivalent to level 13, said local media reports.

Hundreds of trees were uprooted while metal roof sheets and commercial signs were seen flying as the typhoon struck. Many ships and boats were damaged and swept out to the sea.

Power supply was shut partially or entirely in Haiphong, Quang Ninh and Thai Binh to ensure safety.

Islands and coastal areas of Quang Ninh, Haiphong and Thai Binh were pounded by strong winds ranging from levels 8 to 13, with gusts reaching levels 10 to 16. The northern region experienced moderate to heavy rainfall.

Hanoi has seen strong winds at levels 6-7, with gusts reaching levels 9-10. As of 1 p.m. on September 7, the Cat Linh-Ha Dong and Nhon-Hanoi Station metro lines have been temporarily suspended to ensure safety.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has instructed coastal provinces affected by the typhoon to maintain road closures and restrict residents from leaving their homes until 8 p.m. today.
