HCMC – Super typhoon Yagi made landfall in Hainan Island (China) this afternoon, September 6, bringing gales and heavy rains to the northern region of Vietnam, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
The super typhoon has brought strong winds of level 6 and gusts up to level 8 to Bach Long Vi Island off Haiphong City. Meanwhile, Hanoi experienced heavy rain and powerful winds, resulting in numerous trees falling and traffic being congested.
At 3 p.m. today, the super typhoon was about 450 kilometers from the coast of Quang Ninh Province. It was packing maximum winds of 201 kilometers per hour, equivalent to level 16, with gusts exceeding level 17.
Yagi is moving west-northwest at 15-20 kilometers per hour. It is expected to traverse the northern part of the Hainan Island and decrease in intensity by two levels before entering the Gulf of Tonkin.
As of 1 a.m on September 7, the typhoon is forecast to be over the eastern waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, about 230 kilometers southeast of Quang Ninh, with winds at level 14 and gusts reaching level 17.
After that, it would continue moving inland at 20 kilometers and make landfall between Quang Ninh and Nam Dinh provinces.
