Unlocking green transport

As urbanization continues and air pollution increases in HCMC, green transport would help reduce emissions and enhance urban livability. However, the journey from vision to action remains lengthy and complex, requiring a fundamental overhaul of the city’s mobility ecosystem, from commuter behavior to infrastructure planning and financial policy. A clear vision, yet a long road ahead HCMC is working toward its 2050 net-zero emissions target through a series of concrete actions, including the development of 355 kilometers of metro lines, motorbike emission inspections in mid-2027, and the tentative conversion of nearly 400,000 gasoline motorbikes to electric ones for ride-hailing and delivery drivers. Experts say these measures are essential, particularly as urban transportation continues to be one of the major sources of emissions today. The role of public transport in cutting emissions, especially metro lines, has been clearly demonstrated in major cities worldwide. In Delhi, the metro systems helped reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 120 tons per day in 2006, which rose to 724 tons per day by 2011.
