Embracing hybrid models

Foreign corporations dominate Vietnam’s modern retail market, with hypermarkets and shopping malls occupying the upper tier and convenience store chains commanding the lower tier. In this competitive landscape, Vietnamese retail firms are carving out a niche in the middle segment by adopting mini supermarket chains and hybrid models blending mini supermarkets and convenience stores. WinMart and Bach Hoa Xanh have undertaken significant restructuring efforts, achieving notable advancements in their operations in 2024-2025. Retaining domestic market share Vietnamese retailers are leveraging convenience as a competitive edge, strategically placing stores on street corners to enhance accessibility, often surpassing foreign rivals in store density. “In my perspective, Bach Hoa Xanh is a mini supermarket chain, while WinMart and its WinMart+ and WIN formats represent a hybrid model that combines supermarkets, mini supermarkets, and convenience stores,” said Do Duy Thanh, head of FnB Director, in an interview with The Saigon Times.
