HCMC – More than 156,000 passengers traveled through Tan Son Nhat International Airport on February 12, or the 25th day of the lunar month, as travel demand surged ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.

The airport handled an estimated 1,027 flights during the day, including 519 departures and 508 arrivals, according to a representative of Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

Domestic flights accounted for the majority, with 350 departures and 338 arrivals. The remainder were international services.

Of the total 156,315 passengers, around 99,334 were departing travelers and 56,981 were arrivals. Domestic passengers numbered 96,094, while international passengers reached 60,221.

Passenger traffic typically rises sharply in the days leading up to Tet, as residents leave HCMC to return to their hometowns and overseas Vietnamese fly back for family reunions.

Airport authorities said operations at both domestic and international terminals remained stable despite the high volume. Additional aviation, security and ground staff were deployed during peak hours to assist passengers and manage congestion.

Vehicle traffic around terminal pick-up and drop-off areas increased but remained under control. The airport said it had coordinated with relevant agencies to ensure flight safety and minimize congestion during the holiday peak.
