HCMC – The Department of Science and Technology of HCMC has asked three telecom groups—Viettel, VNPT and MobiFone—to research and develop 6G technology in 2026 and coordinate with the department to pilot 6G coverage in one area of the city, with written feedback requested by March 7.
In an official dispatch sent to the three companies, the department proposed that they conduct research and development of sixth-generation mobile technology within this year. At the same time, they are requested to work with the department to implement a pilot 6G network in a designated area in the city.
According to the department, in mid-February 2026, the HCMC Steering Committee for Science and Technology Development, Innovation and Digital Transformation issued a plan to implement the Politburo’s Resolution 57 on breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation and national digital transformation in the city in 2026.
Under the plan, the department was assigned to lead the research, development and trial of 6G mobile technology in HCMC and to propose to the Ministry of Science and Technology that a pilot be conducted in a specific area of the city.
To carry out the assignment, the department held a meeting with local mobile telecom firms, including Viettel HCMC, VNPT HCMC and MobiFone HCMC, to exchange information on related matters.
At the meeting, the enterprises said 6G technology remains in the research phase, with no official technical standards issued and no widely available commercial 6G end-user devices on the market.
They added that mobile telecom companies are currently focusing on 5G network development and have no plans to research or deploy 6G technology at this stage.
