After six years of restoration, An Lang—the tomb complex of three Nguyen kings in Hue City—has been reopened to free public viewing starting August 1, according to VnExpress.

Hoang Viet Trung, director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, said that the free admission period aims to gauge visitor numbers, assess the effectiveness of reception and interpretation services, and provide data for setting ticket prices to be proposed to the provincial government in the upcoming session.

An Lang, spanning nearly six hectares on Duy Tan Street in An Cuu Ward, Hue City, is the resting place of three Nguyen Dynasty kings: Duc Duc, Thanh Thai, and Duy Tan.

After more than a hundred years, An Lang had suffered significant damage. In 2018, Hue City authorities began the restoration of the tomb with a total investment of VND40 billion. The main components of the project were completed at the beginning of 2023.

Man rescued by two police officers

On July 27, when not on duty, Lieutenant Ly A Chanh, police officer of Pa Khoa Commune, and Lieutenant Nguyen Duy Khanh, police officer of Noong Heo Commune, both in Sin Ho District, Lai Chau Province, went to a neighboring commune to play sports with their colleagues.

On the way, the two officers heard someone calling for help. They stopped their motorbike just to learn that a man slipped and fell into the Na Tam Stream unconscious because his head bumped into a rock in the stream. No one dared to plunge into the deep and troubled water to save the victim. Chanh and Khanh then jumped into the swift current and managed to bring the unconscious victim onto the bank.

The victim, Tao Van Dieng, 34, a local man, then underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and could finally return home safe and sound. A few days later, Dieng’s family invited the two police officers to their home to extend their gratitude to the latter. Dieng told thanhnien.vn that he could die without being rescued by the two brave police officers.

A female war invalid with a heart of gold

Dang Thi Bay, 82, a war invalid living in Lap Vo District, Dong Thap Province, has been selling lottery tickets for many years and used all the money to take care of the local war martyrs cemetery.

Bay joined the revolutionary movement when she was 13 years old. She was wounded after a combat in 1968, where many of her comrades died. Despite her wounds, she still asked to serve the army until 1975. After the national liberation, she worked as head of the commune’s health station for a few years before retirement.

In 2010, learning that Long Hung A Commune would build a cemetery for war martyrs, Bay contributed all her savings worth over VND110 million from her pension and lottery ticket sales, a big sum for a war invalid, to the construction of the cemetery.

Ever since, except for rainy days or the days she was ill, Bay visits the cemetery and burns incense for war martyrs almost every day before or after selling lottery tickets on her electric tricycle. Many youth union members have also lent her a hand in looking after the cemetery. Aware of the heart of the war invalid, local residents are willing to buy lottery tickets as a way to support her deed, vnexpress.net reported.

Wonderful recovery of a female doctor

On April 20, Dr. Hoang Minh Ly, an intern at the National Cancer Hospital – Campus 3 (Tan Trieu, Thanh Tri, Hanoi), was severely wounded by a broken glass of a café in the capital city in a stormy night.

Ly was transferred to the Hanoi Medical University Hospital with serious injuries in her spine, ribs, lungs, liver and spleen. The lower part of her body was paralyzed because of spinal injuries. After undergoing several surgeries for her chest, urinary system, and spinal column, she started undergoing occupational therapy (OT) at the end of May this year.

Thanks to Ly’s great effort and thoughtful support of the doctors and nurses at the Hanoi Medical University Hospital, the intern has been recovering magnificently. She has thus been treated at the hospital for over three months.

On July 30, leaders of the National Cancer Hospital visited Ly at the Hanoi Medical University Hospital. According to Ly’s wish to continue working at Campus 3 of the National Cancer Hospital, the hospital’s leadership will allow her to work at the hospital as soon as she can, tuoitre.vn reported.
