On October 29, although rainfall decreased in southern Quang Tri Province, hundreds of houses, schools, and roads in Hai Lang, Nam Hai Lang, Dien Sanh, and My Thuy communes remained inundated with floodwater.
In such a difficult time, Nguyen Phung, who lives in Nam Hai Lang Commune, used his own tractor, a means of subsistence of his family, to help transport patients, pregnant women and those in need across flooded areas to the nearest hospital.
Phung told dantri.com.vn that most of the roads were submerged by floods, blocking access to cars and motorbikes. In this situation, his tractor was an ideal means of transport, so he would drive it to help transport local people in need to hospitals. On
October 28 alone, he drove his tractor to carry a pregnant woman and several patients across flooded areas to hospitals.
Nguyen Ba Chanh, whose house in Nam Hai Lang Commune was flooded, said that his entire family was evacuated to a higher place thanks to the kindness of Phung. The video clips of the kindhearted man driving his tractor to transport those in need to hospitals or to move locals to higher ground have gone viral on social media recently.
Expectant mother taken to hospital on stretcher
On October 30, a pregnant woman in Son Tay Commune, Quang Ngai Province, had preeclampsia, which was dangerous to the lives of both mother and child. Unfortunately, several sections on the road to the local health station were severely eroded due to torrential rains over the past three days.
In the afternoon on that day, the communal authorities coordinated with the local police and military forces, health workers, and locals to carry the expectant mother on a stretcher to the Son Tay Healthcare Center. They crossed landslide areas on foot and were transported by ambulance across unaffected sections. Finally, the woman was transferred from the healthcare center to the Quang Ngai Hospital for Children and Women by ambulance.
According to baotintuc.vn, by 7 p.m. on the same day, the doctors at the Quang Ngai Hospital for Children and Women performed a C-section successfully to save both the mother and her child.
Foreign tourists in flooding season in Hue
Many foreign tourists visiting the ancient imperial city of Hue during the recent historical flood have had second-to-none experiences in their life. Aart from inconveniences like power and tap water outages, they had lifetime opportunities to wade through floodwater to visit the Imperial City, be transported to the airport by boat, or experience the hospitality of Hue residents during the heavy flooding.
Huynh Trang Nhu Uyen, a freelance tour guide, told thanhnien.vn that she welcomed guests visiting Hue. Due to heavy rains and floods, some visitors were able to wade to the Imperial City but had to wade back to the hotel. However, most visitors had to cancel their tours and were transported to the airport by boat due to flooded sections.
David Miller, a British tourist, said he had never seen such long and heavy rains as in Hue, adding that he was disappointed to see that traffic and sightseeing were disrupted by the flood, but he was surprised at the hospitality and generosity of local residents in the face of the disaster.
Meanwhile, Thuy Linh, owner of Le Robinet homestay in Hue, said almost all the refrigerators, washing machines and mattresses in her facility were damaged by the flood. Fortunately, all her foreign guests sympathized with her and they were willing to help her clean up rooms in the homestay when the floodwater receded.
New record high flood level in Hoi An
After a couple of days being submerged in floodwater, the water on Nguyen Thai Hoc, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Tran Phu in the former ancient city of Hoi An began to recede on October 31, leaving behind heaps of mud and garbage.
Staff members of all agencies and local residents in Hoi An managed to wash mud out of their houses, offices, shops and yards. They collected trash and gathered it for sanitation workers to transport to dumpsites.
However, areas on the southern bank of the Hoai River remained inundated with floodwater on
October 31. Rescue teams and volunteers continued to supply food, drinking water, and necessities to people in flooded areas.
Hoi An residents living in ancient houses used paint to mark this month’s water level on the wood columns to compare with the water levels in previous years. From the record high water level recorded in 1964, this year’s level was even higher than that in 1964, tuoitre.vn reported.
