Traffic accidents kill 12 on first day of Lunar New Year

HCMC – The country saw 18 road traffic accidents on the first day of the Lunar New Year, or February 1, leaving 12 people dead and 11 others injured, according to data from the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.

The number of the traffic accidents edged down by two cases against the same period last year, while the death toll fell by three people year-on-year, the local media reported.

The traffic police of 63 cities and provinces handled more than 1,300 traffic violation cases, imposing fines totaling over VND400 million, impounding seven cars and 584 motorcycles and revoking 57 driving licenses on the day.

In addition, over 200 drivers were fined for driving under the influence of alcohol.

No accidents occurred on railways and waterways on the first day of the Lunar New Year, according to the data.
