HCMC – The Ministry of Transport has called for expedited construction of eight rest areas along the eastern North-South Expressway to address rising demand ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday in 2025.

Transport Minister Tran Hong Minh has directed the Vietnam Expressway Authority, the Department of Road Management, and project management units to collaborate with investors to ensure the facilities are operational by January 20, 2025. Investors unable to meet this deadline must open temporary rest stops or establish new interim facilities to accommodate travelers.

The rest areas, part of key expressway sections like Mai Son–National Highway 45 and Nghi Son–Dien Chau, have faced delays due to land clearance issues and incomplete procedures. These setbacks have affected essential services such as parking and sanitation.

Project managers have been instructed to hold regular meetings with investors to address challenges and maintain progress. The ministry warned that directors will be held accountable for further delays or quality issues.

The Department of Road Management will provide assistance with permits and ensure legal compliance, while the Vietnam Expressway Authority will deploy technical staff on-site to resolve issues promptly.

The Transport Ministry will closely monitor the projects and take disciplinary action against non-compliance, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring the rest areas are ready for the high-traffic Lunar New Year period.
