HCMC – The annual Trieu Khuc Village Festival is being held to commemorate Phung Hung, the national hero who led an uprising against northern domination in the eighth century, featuring traditional rituals and folk performances.
The annual festival at Trieu Khuc Village is being held to commemorate Phung Hung
From early morning, drum and gong performances accompanied palanquin processions and incense-offering ceremonies conducted at the village communal house
Processions featuring participants in traditional costumes and carrying festival flags recreated the cultural setting typical of northern Vietnam
A highlight of the event is the “con di danh bong” dance, a long-standing performance of the village
The performers are unmarried young men from the village who dress in female costumes, including bodices, skirts, headscarves and carrying small drums
According to folk tradition, the dance originated when Phung Hung’s troops were stationed in the village. To encourage morale before battle, soldiers were instructed to dress as women and perform music and dance
The performance later became part of the village’s annual festival rituals and has been passed down through generations
On the communal house grounds, performers presented the dance with alternating soft and humorous movements
In addition to the drum dance, the festival includes lion dances, wrestling and stilt walking
The annual event aims to preserve folk cultural heritage and reinforce community ties
