HCMC – Truong My Lan, former chairwoman of Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group Corporation, has appealed against a life sentence handed down to her in the second phase of a case involving large-scale fraud and money laundering.
The HCMC People’s Court announced on December 12 that 29 out of 34 defendants in the case have filed appeals against the first-instance verdict. Lan has appealed against the entire verdict related to her, though the details of her appeal have not been disclosed.
Among the other appellants are Vo Tan Hoang Van, former CEO of SCB, and Truong Hue Van, Lan’s niece, both of whom are seeking reduced sentences.
Eric Chu Nap Kee, Lan’s husband and chairman of the Board of Directors at Times Square Vietnam Investment, did not file an appeal and accepted a two-year prison sentence for money laundering.
The Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) has also appealed against the court’s handling of material evidence in the case, as well as issues related to asset seizure, inventory, and transaction blocking.
In the first-instance trial, Lan was sentenced to life imprisonment for fraud and asset embezzlement, 12 years in prison for money laundering, and eight years for illegal cross-border currency transfers.
