Tuition fee waivers and reductions proposed for Yagi-hit students

HCMC – The Ministry of Education and Training has called for universities and colleges to offer tuition fee waivers and reductions for students affected by typhoon Yagi.

The ministry just wrote to universities and colleges regarding support for the typhoon- affected students, saying that the typhoon caused huge property damage and claimed hundreds of lives in the northern provinces, including students and their family members.

In addition to waiving or reducing tuition fees, the ministry called on universities and colleges to guide students in obtaining confirmation from local authorities about any sudden financial hardships their families may face, enabling them to apply for loans.

As of September 16, the total damage to infrastructure and teaching equipment caused by the typhoon and flooding was estimated at VND1.26 trillion. Approximately 41,564 sets of textbooks were damaged.

The damage to infrastructure alone totaled VND514.73 billion, with Lao Cai Province suffering the most at VND186.7 billion, followed by Hai Duong, Bac Giang, and other provinces.

Quang Ninh Province has seen the biggest losses in teaching equipment, with damages amounting to VND345.04 billion, followed by Lao Cai with VND315.18 billion.
