HCMC — Typhoon Kalmaegi weakened into a low-pressure system over southern Laos early on November 7, but heavy rain threatens central Vietnam with flash floods and landslides, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Wind speeds dropped below 39 kph. The system is expected to move west-northwest over the next 12 hours before dissipating.
Heavy rain linked to the typhoon has affected provinces and cities from Hue to Khanh Hoa. Between 7 p.m. on November 6 and 3 a.m. on November 7, rainfall reached 208 mm in Son Hoi Station (Dak Lak Province), 204.2 mm at the Bach Ma summit (Hue City), 141.8 mm in Ba Na Station (Danang City), 138.8 mm in Tra Thanh Station (Quang Ngai Province), and 154.8 mm in Tan An 2 Station (Gia Lai Province).
Southern Quang Tri, Danang and the Central Highlands are forecast to receive 20 to 50 mm of rain today, with some areas exceeding 80 mm.
From November 7 to November 8, rainfall of 50 to 150 mm is expected from Thanh Hoa Province to northern Quang Tri Province. Some locations may see more than 200 mm.
Rain today in Quang Tri to Lam Dong is forecast at 10 to 40 mm, with peaks above 70 mm in some areas. Hue and Danang cities are expected to receive 20 to 50 mm, with some places exceeding 90 mm.
The weather center said eight provinces and cities face high risks of flash floods, landslides and ground subsidence on steep slopes and along small streams due to prolonged heavy rain.
