HCMC – British energy companies are expanding cooperation with Vietnamese partners to tap opportunities in the country’s growing offshore wind sector, as Hanoi pushes ahead with its renewable energy targets.

The British Consulate General in HCMC and the British Embassy in Hanoi hosted the third U.K. Energy Mission to Vietnam this week, bringing together leading U.K. offshore wind supply chain firms for a five-day program across Hanoi and HCMC.

The mission focused on exploring partnerships and market potential as Vietnam aims to develop six to 17 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by 2035 and more than 70GW by 2050. The U.K. currently operates about 15GW of offshore wind and has over two decades of experience in the sector.

U.K. businesses met with BritCham’s Energy Working Group, Vietnamese developers including Pacifico Energy, PTSC, COP and VinEnerGo, and visited PTSC Port in the former Vung Tau City to assess infrastructure potential. Networking events in both cities connected more than 50 Vietnamese stakeholders, including policymakers and investors.

“Vietnam has demonstrated bold leadership in its energy transition,” British Ambassador to Vietnam Iain Frew said at a workshop on sustainable energy policy. “The revised Power Development Plan VIII and Resolution 70 reinforce this ambition by prioritizing renewable energy, improving capital access and accelerating reforms to attract private and international investment.”

The energy mission, co-hosted with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, also supported broader U.K. efforts under the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and ongoing regulatory reform initiatives. Discussions covered project financing, investor selection and supply chain development to enable large-scale offshore wind deployment.
