Unused land tops 954,000 hectares

HCMC – Unused land totaled 954,951 hectares as of December 31, 2024, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

The figure was released under Decision No. 456/QD-BNNMT signed by Minister Tran Duc Thang, approving and publishing the 2024 nationwide land inventory for uniform application.

The total natural land area reached 33,214,437 hectares at year-end 2024.

Agricultural land accounted for 28,147,279 hectares, including 6,810,070 hectares for annual crops, 4,963,508 hectares for perennial crops, and 15,539,305 hectares for forestry. Aquaculture covered 745,848 hectares. Concentrated livestock farming totaled 14,840 hectares. Salt production land reached 15,573 hectares, and other agricultural land amounted to 58,135 hectares.

Non-agricultural land totaled 4,112,207 hectares.

Residential land accounted for 793,552 hectares, including 223,070 hectares in urban areas and 570,482 hectares in rural areas. Defense and security land reached 270,688 hectares, while land for government offices covered 14,226 hectares.

Public-use land amounted to 1,319,960 hectares. Land for non-agricultural production and business totaled 346,153 hectares. Public service facilities accounted for 97,935 hectares. Religious and belief-related land reached 13,704 hectares and 7,294 hectares, respectively.

Land for cemeteries, funeral homes, cremation facilities, and ash storage totaled 107,658 hectares. Specialized water surface land reached 1,058,393 hectares. Other non-agricultural land stood at 82,644 hectares.

Of the unused land, 33,726 hectares had been reclaimed by the State but not yet allocated or leased. Unused flat land totaled 153,460 hectares. Unused hilly and mountainous land reached 584,402 hectares. Rocky mountains without forest cover accounted for 87,375 hectares. Unused water surface land totaled 95,987 hectares.

Compared with 2023, the 2024 inventory added detailed classifications under the 2024 Land Law, including land for livestock farming, water supply and drainage works, disaster prevention facilities, environmental facilities, hydrometeorological stations, centralized information technology zones, unused water surface land, and land reclaimed but not yet allocated or leased.
