HCMC – The Ministry of Transport has proposed a budget of about US$67.34 billion for the North-South high-speed rail line, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The proposed maximum speed of the line is 350 kilometers per hour.
The proposed rail line will stretch 1,541 kilometers and incorporate open-track technology, allowing multiple types of trains to operate, promoting competition and preventing service monopolies.
The investment plan for the project is set to be submitted to the National Assembly for approval in October. Following approval, the project will move forward with bidding procedures, surveys, and report preparation.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2027 on the first two sections – Hanoi–Vinh and Nha Trang–HCMC sections. Work on the third section – Vinh–Nha Trang – will follow between 2028 and 2029. The entire line is slated for completion by 2035.
The North-South high-speed railway project aims to modernize Vietnam’s transportation infrastructure, restructure the transport market, and support the country’s socio-economic development.
It will also improve regional connectivity, reshape urban areas, rationalize population distribution, and promote sustainable transportation while reducing logistics costs and minimizing environmental impact.
