HCMC – Freight and passenger traffic on Vietnam-China cross-border trains has increased strongly since services resumed in late May, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
Trains from Guangxi, China, carried 24,000 standard export containers in the first eight months of this year, rocketing 179% from a year earlier.
Passenger demand has also risen sharply, despite a modest volume. Since May 25, more than 8,000 people have traveled on the route. Nearly 2,700 passengers were recorded in August, an 89% increase from July.
The overnight passenger train connects Nanning in China with Gia Lam Station in Hanoi City, Vietnam. It offers soft-sleeper cabins, allowing travelers to arrive the next morning. Business travelers and students make up a large share of passengers.
Chinese businesses with partners in Vietnam and Vietnamese students in Guangxi are among the frequent users of the service.
Freight traffic includes more than 20,000 tons of ASEAN fruit such as durian, mangosteen, and jackfruit, shipped through the Pingxiang railway port into China.
To improve services, the Nanning branch of China Railway Group has introduced bilingual Chinese-Vietnamese announcements and trained staff in Vietnamese and English.
