HCMC — Vietnam and China have signed a protocol allowing the formal export of Vietnamese fresh jackfruit to the Chinese market, according to Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

The protocol was signed today, November 27, during Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Duc Thang’s working trip to China from November 26 to 28. Thang met with Zhao Zeng Lian, deputy minister of the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC), to discuss agricultural trade and market access.

Lian said two-way agricultural trade had expanded in 2025, with China importing US$8.7 billion of Vietnamese farm products in the first 10 months of the year. He said China would continue to open its market to qualified Vietnamese goods.

GACC has signed four export protocols with Vietnam this year, covering chili peppers, passion fruit, rice bran and raw bird’s nests. The fresh jackfruit protocol is the fifth agreement.

Thang said China remains a key trading partner for Vietnam. He noted that bilateral trade in the first 10 months of 2025 had already exceeded the full-year figure for 2024. He called for further cooperation in agriculture and investment.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said fresh jackfruit is already exported to China but will now be regulated under a formal protocol. The ministry said this could reduce trading risks and support production expansion and quality standards.

Vietnam earned US$7.09 billion from fruit and vegetable exports in the first 10 months of 2025, up 15.1% from a year earlier. China accounted for 62.9% of the total. The sector is targeting US$8.5 billion in exports for the full year.
