HCMC – Bamboo products, such as plywood, mats, teapots, sticks and other household items, bring around US$300-400 million in annual export revenue.
The EU, South Korea and Japan are currently the largest markets for Vietnam’s bamboo products.
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development statistics show that Vietnam has 1.6 million hectares of land under bamboo cultivation, which provides material for turning out 2.5 to 3 million tons of bamboo products.
Bamboo also helps prevent soil erosion and enhances land rehabilitation. As it absorbs carbon well, bamboo also cushions the impact of climate change.
Michel Abadie, director of the World Bamboo Organization, said at a meeting in Dong Thap Province, that if it sees proper investment, the bamboo eco-tourism project will bring about positive results as it generates income for residents in rural areas and contributes to environmental protection.
