HCMC – Irish President Michael Higgins has met with Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and President To Lam during his three-day state visit to Ireland. The leaders discussed ways to deepen bilateral relations and announced Vietnam’s plans to establish its embassy in Dublin.
The meeting took place after the welcome ceremony in honor of Lam and the Vietnamese high-level delegation. Held at the Presidential Palace in Dublin on October 2 (local time), the event was presided over by the Irish president and his spouse.
Higgins expressed admiration for Vietnam’s recent socio-economic achievements, international integration, and commitment to sustainable development goals. He conveyed sympathy to Vietnamese people for the damages caused by typhoon Yagi.
Lam reiterated Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening the multifaceted partnership with Ireland and appreciated the Irish government’s prioritization of Vietnam in its Global Ireland strategy.
Lam informed his host of Vietnam’s decision to establish an embassy in Ireland. The move is expected to bolster Vietnam-Ireland cooperation and bring mutual benefits to both peoples.
He expressed hope that Ireland would continue to support Vietnam in areas such as green growth, digital transformation, and sustainable development.
Vietnam and Ireland agreed to fully utilize the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), support businesses from both countries, and bring bilateral trade to US$5 billion by 2026 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
