HCMC – Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) has put into operation the VSTN terrestrial cable line on August 4, marking the first time Vietnam has an independent international telecommunications network.
The VSTN cable line is approximately 3,900 kilometers long, running from VNPT’s technical center in Danang City to Singapore. It passes through five countries: Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
This land-based cable system links major regional data centers, including Telehouse in Thailand; MY01 Cyberjaya and Equinix JH01 in Malaysia; and Equinix and Global Switch in Singapore.
Developed and operated entirely by VNPT, the VSTN system allows for faster incident response and more reliable connectivity. In the context of frequent undersea cable disruptions, this cable line serves as a critical backup, enhancing the resilience of Vietnam’s telecommunications infrastructure.
VSTN employs Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology. Each wavelength supports a minimum transmission rate of 300 Gbps. The system’s designed capacity is 4 Tbps, with future scalability up to 12 Tbps.
This new infrastructure is expected to meet both current and future data demands. It marks a significant step for Vietnam in gaining control over its international transmission network and improving national data security.
VNPT currently has access to four international submarine cable systems—AAG, APG, AAE-1, and SJC-2—with a combined length of over 65,000 kilometers, and has two telecommunications satellites, Vinasat-1 and Vinasat-2.
The launch of VSTN completes VNPT’s multi-layered network infrastructure spanning land, sea, and space, enhancing Vietnam’s capacity and autonomy in global connectivity.
