HCMC – Doctors at Military Central Hospital 108 have successfully performed Vietnam’s first implant of a third-generation partial artificial heart device (LVAD – HeartMate 3).

The patient, a 46-year-old woman from Thanh Hoa Province, is diagnosed with late-stage heart failure and does not respond to long-term treatment. After consultations, she is selected for the LVAD implant, which helps the heart pump blood more effectively.

The surgery lasts four hours and is supported by Professor Jan D. Schmitto from Germany, who performed the world’s first HeartMate 3 implant in 2014. Two weeks later, the patient could walk and care for herself and is preparing for discharge.

The hospital says this procedure may offer new options for patients with severe heart failure and is part of its long-term strategy to apply advanced medical technologies.
