HCMC – Party General Secretary To Lam has said that Vietnam stands ready to engage in addressing global challenges such as maintaining peace, resolving conflicts, promoting development, ensuring human rights, and responding to climate change.

Party General Secretary To Lam was speaking at his meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in Hanoi on October 25, who is in Vietnam for an official visit to attend the Signing Ceremony and High-level Conference of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, also known as the Hanoi Convention.

The UN Secretary-General’s visit is of special significance, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations (October 24, 1945) and the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day (September 2, 1945), Lam said.

He added that throughout its history — including 30 years of war and 20 years of embargo — Vietnam has transformed from a poor country receiving UN assistance into one that has made remarkable achievements and is now working tirelessly for the common good, for peace, development, and the well-being of its people.

Reaffirming Vietnam’s strong support for multilateralism with the United Nations at its core, Lam stressed that Vietnam is aware of its responsibility and is ready to participate in addressing global issues such as maintaining peace, managing conflicts, advancing development, ensuring human rights, and tackling climate change. With a profound appreciation for the value of peace, Vietnam supports the settlement of disputes and conflicts through peaceful means, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

He proposed the UN Secretary-General back Vietnam’s deeper participation in this field, particularly in UN peacekeeping operations, given the current complex global conflicts.

Reiterating that people are at the center of all policies, Lam said Vietnam prioritizes stable, sustainable, and long-term development, with an emphasis on science, technology, innovation, digital transformation, and environmental protection. He added that Vietnam is also willing to share its experiences and provide support to other countries in areas such as economic development, agriculture, healthcare, and education.

Expressing gratitude to the UN and member states for their trust and support in electing Vietnam to the Human Rights Council for two consecutive terms, he said this was the clearest testament to Vietnam’s commitments and achievements in safeguarding the rights and interests of its people.

Speaking at the meeting, UN Secretary-General Guterres expressed confidence that under Party General Secretary To Lam’s leadership, Vietnam will achieve its ambitious goals, including double-digit economic growth in the coming years, and will play a bigger role on the world stage.

He described Vietnam as a key pillar of South-South cooperation and an anchor of a balanced, stable, and law-based multipolar world order. Vietnam would strongly support a balanced reform of the United Nations, maintain development assistance activities—particularly for developing countries—and oppose unilateral actions, he added.

On regional and international issues, both sides agreed on the need to strengthen solidarity, promote dialogue and cooperation to prevent conflicts, and resolve disputes peacefully in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.
