HCMC – Vietnam is stepping up efforts to promote its One Commune, One Product (OCOP) initiative on the global stage, leveraging the increasing demand for high-quality, sustainable goods.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has been actively building connections between Vietnamese producers and major retailers, with many OCOP items now available on the shelves of international retailers such as Mega Market, Aeon, Amazon, Lotte, and Walmart, local media reported.
The OCOP program, aiming to boost Vietnam’s rural economy and promote local produce, has attracted over 7,400 participants, including cooperatives and businesses. Products are rated on a one-to-five-star scale, with five-star items meeting international quality standards.
The country has over 13,000 OCOP products rated three stars or higher. However, only about 50 have earned the five-star rating, according to Vietnam News Agency.
“While OCOP products are sought after domestically, exporting them to discerning markets like Europe and the Americas requires a heightened focus on quality and value,” said Cao Phuong Lan, a representative from the Ministry’s European-American Market Department, at a recent seminar in Hanoi.
Free trade agreements with Europe and the Americas give OCOP products a competitive edge, yet challenges remain due to inflation and geopolitical tensions, she added.
To help local producers meet global standards, the Government is enhancing support for export logistics, regulatory compliance, and product quality improvements.
Trade promotion activities have been launched in key markets such as France, Japan, and Thailand to facilitate connections between Vietnamese OCOP suppliers and international distributors.
