HCMC – Vietnam has captured the second-largest share of China’s imported fruit market, accounting for 20% of purchases worth over US$4 billion in the first nine months of 2025, with durian and bananas driving strong growth.
China spent a total of US$20.3 billion on fruit imports during this period. Thailand led with US$6.7 billion in exports, up 10% year-on-year and holding a 33% market share. Vietnam’s exports grew 19% compared with the same period last year, raising its market share by 2% to 20%.
Vietnam shipped nearly 620,000 tons of durian to China by the end of September, valued at US$2.3 billion, competing closely with Thailand (US$3.9 billion), as well as Malaysia, the Philippines, and Cambodia. As for bananas, Vietnam exported 568,000 tons, surpassing the Philippines’ 416,000 tons in volume, though the Philippines led in value at US$245 million versus Vietnam’s US$232 million, due to higher prices.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, secretary-general of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), said Vietnam’s banana exports could rise further in the coming months. Early winter in China is reducing local supply, while typhoons in the Philippines may disrupt its exports.
