HCMC – The 499th Covid-19 patient, aged 68, has been confirmed dead at 4:55 a.m. this morning at Danang Oncology Hospital, due to malignant blood cancer and severe pneumonia, said Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Truong Son.

Professor Nguyen Gia Binh, president of Vietnam Association of Emergency, Intensive Care Medicine and Clinical Toxicology and member of the national steering committee for Covid-19 infection prevention and control, said that the female patient passed away as she had severe pneumonia, Covid-19, and did not respond to treatment for end-stage blood cancer.

She had been suffering acute myelogenous leukemia, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

The resident of Danang had been receiving treatment for leukemia at the hospital and was discharged on July 23.

The woman then visited the hospital again after she developed symptoms including fever and cough. Her Covid-19 test result came out positive on July 30.

According to the committee, she only remained at home and went to the hospital for treatment over the past 14 days.

This is the third Covid-19 death being reported since yesterday in Vietnam, after the 428th and 437th patients. All the three were old and had many underlying health conditions before being discovered to have contracted the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 that causes Covid-19.

Of the 182 Covid-19 patients currently under treatment, 20 are critically ill while the health condition of 22 others is worsening.
