HCMC – Vietnam’s rice market has shown little movement in the past week as the Autumn–Winter harvest nears completion, while export prices have slipped slightly amid cautious sentiment among traders.
Vietnam’s 5% broken rice was quoted at US$360–365 per ton on December 24, down from US$370–375 per ton a week earlier, marking the lowest level since late November. Traders said export demand remained subdued as buyers monitored policy signals from key importing countries.
Market participants are closely watching Indonesia after President Joko Widodo announced a ban on rice imports, citing ample domestic supply. However, traders expect limited impact on Vietnam, noting that rice shipments to Indonesia have been modest this year.
According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the country had exported 7.67 million tons of rice worth US$3.92 billion in the year to December 15.
In the domestic market, prices were mostly stable as only small areas of the Autumn–Winter crop remained to be harvested, according to the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Agriculture and Environment.
In Can Tho, Jasmine rice held steady at VND8,400 per kilogram, while IR 5451 stayed at VND6,200/kg, ST25 at VND9,400/kg, and OM 18 at VND6,600/kg.
In Dong Thap, IR 50404 was traded at VND6,800/kg, while OM 18 remained unchanged at VND6,900/kg. In Vinh Long, OM 5451 was priced at VND6,300/kg, and OM 4900 at VND7,000/kg.
In An Giang, most fresh paddy prices were stable. OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 ranged from VND6,500 to VND6,700/kg, while OM 5451 stood at VND5,800–6,000/kg. IR 50404 rose slightly by VND200/kg to VND5,500–5,600/kg.
Traders said the domestic market is expected to remain calm in the short term, with attention shifting to export demand and policy developments in major importing countries.
