HCMC – Vietnam’s rice exports surged in the first eight months of the year, driven by strong global demand, while domestic prices remained relatively stable, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The country exported nearly 6.16 million tons of rice, up by 5.9% year-on-year, and generated nearly US$3.85 billion in revenue, up by 21.7%, the ministry reported.
In the Mekong Delta, rice prices for various varieties held steady compared to the previous week, according to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in An Giang Province.
Vietnam’s 5% broken rice was offered at US$578 per ton, unchanged from the previous week, while Thai 5% broken rice rose to US$580 per ton from US$570.
Trade has slowed down as the market is in holiday mode on National Day (September 2), said a trader in An Giang Province. This year, the holiday lasts four days, from August 31 to September 3.
Local traders are also awaiting the results of a tender from Indonesia’s state food procurement agency Bulog, which is expected to be announced on September 5. Last week, Bulog launched an international tender to procure about 350,000 tons of rice.
