Vietnam, Russia strengthen collaboration on carbon emission reductions

By Thuy Linh

HCMC – Vietnam and Russia are exploring collaborative plans to reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha and Boris Yuryevich Titov, Russian presidential envoy for sustainable development, held discussions on January 15 to address global environmental challenges and promote sustainable development goals.

Deputy PM Ha emphasized Vietnam’s commitment to international environmental initiatives, including waste management, water quality improvement, air pollution control, and tackling marine plastic waste. He reaffirmed Vietnam’s pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and its transition to a low-carbon economy through policies aligned with global climate agreements.

Vietnam is also advancing efforts to establish a domestic carbon market and actively participating in international collaborations such as the Asian Zero Emissions Community (AZEC) and the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), Ha noted.

Titov highlighted Russia’s dedication to addressing climate change with technological solutions, including carbon capture technologies, nuclear energy integration, and green fuel production. He also proposed Vietnam’s involvement in developing global standards for carbon measurement and quota allocation.

The Russian side suggested establishing a research fund under the BRICS group and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to support technological advancements in emissions reduction and sustainability.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation on environmental challenges. During his January 14–15 visit to Vietnam, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin emphasized joint efforts in renewable energy and the adoption of circular economy practices to foster sustainability.
