HCMC – Vietnam expects to export more than 7.5 million tons of rice this year, with the Mekong Delta providing the bulk of the supply, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
A recent report from the ministry projects the Mekong Delta will cultivate nearly 3.8 million hectares of rice this year, yielding an average of 6.34 tons per hectare, bringing total rice production to 23.97 million tons.
Of this, 8.9 million tons will be reserved for domestic consumption, seeds, and animal feed, leaving 15.1 million tons of commercial paddy for milling, equivalent to 7.54 million tons of for export.
High-quality and fragrant rice will make up 75% of exports, or 5.66 million tons. Glutinous rice will account for 10% (754,000 tons), while medium-quality rice will represent 15% (1.13 million tons).
Vietnam’s rice export strategy this year includes shipping 4.53 million tons in the first half of the year and the remaining three million tons in the second half.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has recommended increasing exports during peak harvest months—February, March, April, July, August, and September—to adapt to market conditions.
It has also proposed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade enhance trade promotion efforts to expand rice export markets, ensuring the full export of available rice while maintaining a balanced benefit between producers and exporters.
